Hello...

I'm nutritionist Karen Fischer, author of The Healthy Skin Kitchen, The Eczema Detox and The Eczema Diet.

For the past 20 years I've helped thousands of skin disorder patients get their life back. ​

Having and itchy skin rash can be devastating and painful, and in most cases, slapping on cream is not enough. But there are other effective solutions and we want to share them with you. 

Can I tell you a bit about myself...

 

I was the sickly-looking kid with headaches, dark circles under my eyes and a host of undiagnosed food intolerances—I often joked "I grew up on aspirin".  Topical steroids got me through my rash-prone teen years. And in my thirties, after flea-bombing the house, I ended up with an embarrassing case of psoriasis on my torso, and I had mild rosacea which cleared up on my Eczema Diet program. 

 

In my 40s, stress triggered head-to-toe eczema, hives and an autoimmune condition called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) which gave me severe food intolerances that left me only able to eat eight foods!  I was in despair and so damn itchy that I could not sleep for days. So if you are going through anything difficult right now, I get it. It’s embarrassing and painful and don’t get me started on the social isolation!

Skin problems also run in my family. My daughter Ayva was born with eczema and after her skin cleared up she became the inspiration for The Eczema Diet book, which I wrote after seeing eczema patients for many years. Today Ayva has beautiful skin and she lives a normal life.

 

And me ... I found a way to beat MCAS and all of my skin issues. At the age of 49, I now have baby soft skin and I can eat ALL of the foods I couldn't eat before (watch the video, below, to see the before and after photos). The Healthy Skin Kitchen also makes my skin glow with good health and I feel energetic and the happiest I've ever felt.

 

As mentioned, for the past 20 years I've helped thousands of skin disorder patients get their life back, and this has occurred via my books, clinic, team of nutritionists and skincare company. ​ I'm also known for helping the so-called 'hopeless cases of eczema' that no one else could fix, with doctors and naturopaths sending these patients my way for a consult, or referring them to my books.

 

My patients have said I was their "last hope", but we should all be eating healthier (and diagnosing food intolerances) as a FIRST prescription, not a last one.

FAQ

​"I did allergy testing and I avoid the foods I’m allergic to, and I still have eczema. So do I really need to change my diet?"


Allergy testing is a good start BUT research shows that allergy testing is often inaccurate and that’s why this dietary approach fails for a lot of people. For example, researchers tested 183 children with eczema using two doctor-prescribed, so-called reliable, testing methods. They found 67% of them adversely reacted to dairy during a skin prick test. However, 0% of them reacted to dairy during the patch test (when it was first done) but then 89% of them adversely reacted to dairy during the SAME patch test after they waited a while (which showed a delayed adverse reaction to dairy). So if this group of children had relied on the skin prick test alone, 22% of them would have been falsely diagnosed. If they had done the patch test and not waited enough time, 89% of them would have been incorrectly diagnosed. Plus allergy testing does not diagnose Food Intolerance, such as Gluten Intolerance, Salicylate Sensitivity or Histamine Intolerance, and these chemicals can make people itch like crazy. Food Intolerance can ONLY be diagnosed by doing a very specific elimination diet, such as the Food Intolerance Diagnosis Program (known as FID). The FID Program has been specifically designed for people with skin inflammation, it has helped thousands of people get answers, it is backed by science and it is far more accurate than allergy testing. Of course, if you have anaphylaxis you should definitely avoid those foods—and don’t worry, our recipes do not include common allergy foods including peanut, sesame, dairy, egg and wheat. And you can take your prescribed medications while following any of The Healthy Skin Kitchen Programs. You can also use our programs in combination with your doctor-prescribed allergy test results, especially if you have done a skin prick test or a delayed patch test, but keep in mind other tests are even less reliable. If your allergy tests had given you ALL of the answers you wouldn’t be here today searching for answers! "Why don't you have avocado and coconut oil in your diet? All of the health bloggers recommend these foods for eczema, so why should I believe you?"


The various Healthy Skin Kitchen Programs are not based on current food trends or fads that you might be into right now. My different diet approach can confuse some people who think that there are only two healthy cooking oils (olive and coconut... sound familiar?) and they MUST eat avocado DAILY because their favourite blogger eats it ALL THE TIME. There is nothing wrong with these foods IF you have normal skin or IF you are not a sensitive skin type. If those foods had really worked for you, you wouldn't be here searching for answers, right? I could have easily regurgitated these trends to you, because that's in line with your current beliefs (and that's what you want to hear). However, that would NOT help you or anyone with a difficult case of skin inflammation. In fact, those fads could be harmful to someone with food chemical intolerance. So I won't make you follow fads ... because the science says that avocado and almonds and turmeric lattes can make some people ITCH LIKE CRAZY, or get migraines or irritable bowel or AHDH. My motto is "first do no harm" and IF IN DOUBT leave it out. I ensure all my programs are both SAFE and EFFECTIVE, and that's why I am confident they are the very best for people with sensitive, rash-prone skin. The Healthy Skin Kitchen programs are science-based and they have been tried and tested for more than 15 years on thousands of people with skin inflammation, via my clinic and seven health books. "Is your diet approach backed by science?"


The Healthy Skin Kitchen programs are based on Food Chemical Intolerance research and Skin Inflammation research and Eczema research that has been published in peer-reviewed journals over the past 50+ years. This includes research conducted by the RPA Hospital Allergy Unit in Sydney—research that is published on the Australian Government website, so you know it’s legit. It took years for me to compile this information and I spent many nights on my computer, often until midnight. Each time I found a research paper that linked skin inflammation to food chemical intolerance I wondered, why don't people with eczema and other skin rashes know about this?!!! NOBODY was talking about it and still today, people recommend trendy high chemical foods to people with skin inflammation. It's just crazy!




"What about Leaky Gut, can your approach help with that?"


Yes it can ... It is a scientific fact that food chemicals, including salicylates and lectins, can create tiny holes in the gut lining and cause temporary damage to the stomach lining, especially in children and sensitive individuals. Most popular diets, including the Mediterranean diet, Vegan and Paleo diets, are good diets but they are also VERY RICH in plant chemicals that can damage the gut lining in sensitive individuals. So these diets are not usually suitable for people with chronic skin inflammation such as eczema (unless it is an "easy case" of eczema, which I cover in another FAQ, below). Leaky gut is such a popular topic right now but we are not getting the full story. Food chemical intolerance is one of the major causes leaky gut. And The Healthy Skin Kitchen is the first program to properly address this issue.




"I'm vegan, and I want to stay being vegan, so can I do your program?"


YES. In the past, I have been vegan too so I understand this diet well—it's a way of life more than just a diet. So The Healthy Skin Kitchen Membership includes vegan menus that you can follow or adapt, and plenty of delicious vegan recipes that everyone can enjoy, not just vegans and vegetarians.




"I have an autoimmune disease so I do not eat any grains or legumes. So do you have Paleo-inspired recipes or programs?"


YES. I have previously suffered from an autoimmune disease that left me unable to eat grains and legumes (temporarily) so I understand what you are going through. And I know the Paleo regime well. So we have included Paleo menus and recipes that adhere to the Autoimmune Paleo rules, while also being lower in food chemicals as this is an even better approach to helping people cope with autoimmune conditions. And ANYONE can enjoy these delicious recipes, not just Paleo devotees. For people who wish to expand their diet, The Healthy Skin Kitchen Membership teaches you how to incorporate healthy cooking methods that can help your body to accept and be nourished by a wider variety of foods. "Why do some people's eczema clear up easily and I have suffered for 20 years? I have tried everything so what am I doing wrong?"


It is not your fault. Some people have what I call "easy eczema" and other people (like you and me) have/had "difficult eczema" which needs a more tailored and holistic approach. People with "easy eczema" don't have chemical intolerance, so they can slap on a standard eczema cream or clean up their diet a bit, and hey-presto, their eczema is gone. Then they brag about it online and when other people follow their advice or reads their reviews, they do not get the same results. The world is full of "easy eczema" solutions. On the other hand, research by Loblay and Swain (from the RPA Hospital Allergy Unit) proved that 52% of people with eczema (and 62% of people with hives) have salicylate sensitivity, so they adversely react to avocado and coconut. And 36% of people with eczema (and 62% of people with hives) adversley react to amines, which are found in fermented foods, tomato, coconut and avocado. So why does no one try to help the people who have "difficult eczema" which is linked to food chemical intolerance? People with "difficult eczema" are usually the ones that suffer and suffer and keep searching until they find me or my books. So if this sounds like you, you are finally on the right track! "Why did you create the Food Intolerance Diagnosis Program? Couldn’t I just follow a standard elimination diet?"


The FID Program was initially created more than 15 years ago for my patients who had severe skin inflammation and undiagnosed food chemical intolerances. They needed answers and they needed them fast as they were itchy and covered in skin rashes. BUT I felt that other elimination diets were too UNHEALTHY as they recommended white sugar, white flour and junk food, and the recipes just looked depressing and not yummy at all. My daughter initially did one of these elimination diets and, as a nutritionist, I felt it was going to make her skin (and health) worse over time. So I decided to create a HEALTHY, nutritionist-designed elimination diet that not just diagnosed food intolerances, it also had to taste great AND improve my patient's health so they could eventually go back to eating the foods they loved. If you are eating HEALTHIER and your skin is getting WORSE that can be a sign of undiagnosed food intolerances. You are probably eating avocado, broccoli, tomato, coconut oil and almonds by the bucket-load, because you’ve been told they are “great for your skin”, right? BUT these foods are naturally rich in food chemicals that can actually trigger skin rashes, including eczema, rosacea and hives. As I always say, “One person’s superfood is another’s sleepless night itching.” Our Food Intolerance Diagnosis Program (know as FID) reveals exactly what types of foods you can safely eat to gain clear skin. My doctor told me my skin rash was not caused by diet. Is this true?


I don’t know your circumstances so that depends … Did you doctor prescribe allergy testing combined with an elimination diet that tested for food intolerance and chemical intolerance? Some hospitals offer this service so it depends where you were referred to in order to receive a proper diagnosis. If you have only tried topical medications and you are still suffering and want answers, then try our approach. You won’t know if your skin rash is being triggered or worsened by your diet, until you change what you are eating and see for yourself. Many of my former patients were told that their eczema or psoriasis was not caused by diet, yet their skin rash completely cleared up when they changed their diet and did the Food Intolerance Diagnosis Program. It was a revelation for many of them. You could be missing out on this life-changing information, but you won’t know how beneficial a low chemical diet can be until you try it.
