Dairy Free Milk Options

Milk options for your skin type In many recipes you will see 'use dairy free milk of choice' suggested. To keep the skin happy and the itch away there are a few dairy free milk options we prefer as they are lower in food chemicals such as salicylates, and free from hormones found in dairy milks such as cows and goats milk. Here are the HSK milk options for specific skin types and our favourite brands. (please note, you will need to trial what brands work best for your skin, the following options are just suggestions and does not include an exclusive list of the only milk brand options available).

Oat milk It’s cheap to buy, vegan-friendly, low salicylate and low amine, making it a good low chemical option. The natural beta-glucan in oat milk helps to lower cholesterol and trigger the satiety response (so you are less likely to overeat!). Note it contains a protein similar to gluten so not be suitable for celiacs. Tips: Shake the container before each use to make it creamy (as it settles on the bottom of the container when stored); buy unsweetened and check other ingredients before purchase (sunflower oil, water, salt and calcium are all good basic ingredients). If you can’t find it in store, you can make your own using our Creamy Oat milk recipe.

Cashew milk It’s vegan-friendly, low salicylate, low amine (but histamine producing), gluten-free and much nicer than almond milk. Shake the container before each use to make the cashew milk creamy. Available from supermarkets and health food shops, but check the other ingredients before purchase. Buy unsweetened as this milk already tastes great. You can also make your own using our Cashew Milk Recipe.

Hemp milk It’s vegan-friendly, paleo-friendly and gluten-free (the level of salicylates and amines is unknown so this is suitable for those on a more lenient program or when skin is clearing and you are testing your food chemical tolerance). Favour unsweetened (but note it’s an acquired taste).
