DIY Microdermabrasion

Makes one treatment, preparation time 1 minute (plus 2–4 minutes application)

This is my favourite DIY exfoliation facial as it removes dead skin cells and leaves your skin feeling baby soft and smooth. It’s idea for most skin types, acne scars, enlarged pores, clogged pores, flaky skin and wrinkles and as a general beauty treatment you can do once a week. This treatment is not suitable for people who are sensitive to sodium bicarbonate or people with acne or rashes, as you should not rub inflamed skin (but you can pat the paste on, keep wet and gently rinse off after a minute).

Rinse your face and neck with water and semi-pat dry. Using your cupped hand or a small bowl, mix approximately 1 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) with a teaspoon of water, then pat the paste onto your face and neck and gently rub your skin in circular motions for 2–4 minutes (avoiding the eye area), and adding more water if necessary to keep it liquid. If it stings you can add more water to your skin or remove it sooner. Wash it off with water — tap water is naturally acidic and will help to balance your pH but if desired, make your own toner and use it to rinse your face and neck (see toner recipe, below). Then moisturize with a hydrating balm.
